A heavy industrial city, Miskolc is the fourth largest city in Hungary and is capital of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén in Northern Hungary. Having been inhabited since ancient times, there are archeological findings that date a human presence in the area back 70,000 years. In modern times, the city was transformed into one of heavy industry as a result of World War II preparations. During a long and turbulent history, the city has survived fires, floods, plagues and foreign invasions however always maintained itself as the centre of northeastern Hungary. The city today is working to become more cultural and tourism-focused, adding a variety of events and exhibitions yearly to help change the city’s image.
